Samsung Infuse, unlocked

01 Jun

I never like the idea of provider-locked phone. It makes no sense, and an obvious anti-consumer business practice. I mean think about it, would you buy a laptop that is locked into a specific ISP? No. So why would you buy a phone that is locked into a single carrier?

My first provider-locked phone is the iPhone 3GS. I bought it on impulse, after Apple announced the 3rd gen iPod Touch wouldn’t have a camera on it. Trying to buy an unlocked phone in the US via official channels (ie. not imported) with full warranty and support is extremely difficult. No unlocked iPhones in the US. As for Android, only the Nexus One and GSM Nexus S are sold unlocked. All the rest are provider locked.

Now, if you’re with T-Mobile, they do have a fairly decent unlocking policy. If you pay for the phone full-price, or if you’ve been in good standing with them for x amount of months, you can simply call and get the unlock code for your phone. T-Mobile doesn’t advertise this for obvious reason, but the policy is there. AT&T, which I’m with, on the other hand, is a different story. They have a bogus unlocking policy. Buying the handset at full price doesn’t mean you can get it unlocked. Per AT&T’s policy, they won’t unlock handsets which they are the exclusive seller. Well, guess what, all of the phones that AT&T carry are custom-made for them. So this is akin to AT&T saying they can refuse any request for unlocking any of the phones they sell. What a bunch of bull.

I recently bought the Samsung Infuse since I’m getting frustrated with my Nexus One with its severely limited internal storage memory. You can read my impression on the Samsung Infuse on my previous post, and to be honest, I kinda like it. The large 4.5″ screen is actually very nice to have, and I can’t help feeling cramped everytime I try to go back using my iPhone/Nexus One. Problem is, obviously it’s AT&T locked. Thus my quest to unlock my Infuse.

AT&T wouldn’t unlock the Infuse, per their policy I mentioned above. Of course, I can wait to see if AT&T will change their mind, but they usually do that after the phone is already on the market for a long time, and that’s not a guarantee either. So getting an official unlock from AT&T is a no go.
There are people selling unlock codes on forums and ebay. Obviously, there’s no way to guarantee anything, plus you have to spend money to use a device that you already own? No way.
Well, XDA to the rescue. Found this post on their forum:

Yup, somebody crafted up a simple program to root and unlock the Samsung Infuse. The program will even give you the unlock code! How convenient. 😀
Even better, the guy put up the simple instruction on the thread. Everything needed is on the zip file. All you need to do in addition is to download Samsung’s PC software called KIES if you’re on Windows (I use a Windows 7 machine). Trying to find the software on US Samsung site is not that easy as Samsung only listed the software as available on certain devices. Easier to just google it and download it from Samsung’s international site.
With Samsung Kies installed, all you have to do is download the zip file from XDA, un-zip it, and run the batch file (one for root+unlock, the other is just for unlocking). I opted to just do the unlock. Simply follow the easy steps (turning on USB debugging mode on the phone, connect it via USB, and run the batch file). At first, the batch commands seemed stuck at waiting for a service to be restarted or something, but I just left the program alone, and not too long after that, it showed me the unlock code! All I needed to do next was simply turning off the phone, insert a SIM from another provider, and turn the Infuse back on. It will ask for the unlock code. I punched in the code that was given by the program, and voila, my Samsung Infuse is unlocked! LOL. That’s it. So easy, and free! Screw you AT&T!

I wish unlocking iPhones is this easy, without the need to jailbreak.

Well, Samsung Kies’ software said it didn’t recognize the Infuse, but the driver is there, and the batch file from XDA recognize my Infuse just fine. Make sure you enable USB debugging mode.

I think the phone should stay unlocked.

I read somewhere that before unlocking a phone, you first have to put another sim card and see if the phone would ask you for a network code. I did that by inserting a sim card from an African country and it asked me for the code. Does this mean my AT&T Samsung Infuse 4 G is unlocked?

No. If your phone is already unlocked, you wouldn’t be asked for any code, it would just work. The steps in this post is to get that unlock code that you put in when it ask for the code.

Thanks a lot. I’m about to go to the boonies. I’ll start to unlock following your instructions. I’ll be asking lots of questions as I’m completely ignorant in this arcane stuff. So, in advance, please do bear with me.

Well, it says that the phone was “successfully unlocked.” Two questions: 1) A red triangle icon (with a black exclamation point inside) now permanently appear on the upper left corner of my phone; 2) The phone seemed not to have interacted with Samsung Kies. Did I do something wrong?

      1. I think the red triangle is there asking for you to re-enter you googles password. Simple drag the notification status bar down and you should be able to see the description. This happens every time you change SIM.

      2. Installing Kies is just to get the drivers. You don’t really need it afterwards.

Insert your foreign SIM, and if it works, then the phone is unlocked.

Wow, pika2000, I’m so ashamed. I didn’t know the red icon was a notification that could be dragged down LOL… In fact, the problem had nothing to do with phone unlocking. It was telling me I had changed my email password. So sorry. Again, thanks a lot for being so kind and patient.

    Hi Pika2000

Can i factory reset my phone to carrier settings after unlocking it?

You can always reset your phone, but that shouldn’t affect the unlocked status. Unless you root your phone, there’s no reason why you want to re-lock your phone, if that’s what you meant.

how do you get to the directory to locate the file from terminal? I’m stuck on that part. Can you help?

Terminal? I’m guessing you are using OS X. Sorry, I’m not too familiar with OS X’ terminal. I used the instructions for Windows as it’s just a batch file. You can try asking at the XDA forum.

I have an Infuse but moved to a small town and AT&T doesn’t work here so we switched to straight talk (uses verizon towers) but our current phones have no sim card. Is there a way to jailbreak the phone without a sim card to install after unlocked?

The Infuse is a GSM phone. Verizon uses CDMA. Both technology are not compatible with each other, eg. You cannot use the Infuse on Verizon network, ever. Sorry to say this, but sell the Infuse on eBay/craigslist, there’s no way you can make it work on Verizon network.

How do i get the portable hotspot to work with the infuse

AT&T installed a service that checks if you pay extra for tethering or not to use the portable hotspot option. A way around it is to root the phone, install Titanium backup and freeze that offending service. I’ve returned my Infuse so I cannot really provide you any more details. There should be quite a bunch of info at the XDA forum.

Just learned this trick and it works awesome! I have an ATT Samsung Infuse 4G and the tech at a local mall cell phone carrier(that is not one of the major network carriers), told me to call Att customer service and explain I am going to Australia to visit, study abroad, whatever clever excuse I could muster and they would be obligated by law to provide me with the unlock code for my phone. I admit I was skeptical but the next day I called, and to my amazement it was so simple and quick. The representative even offered to do additional phones for me if I needed. I have since called back and unlocked my friends HTC incredible as well. I don’t know how long before att&t catches on, or if they are in fact bound by some type of “communication law” to divulge this otherwise guarded info, when it comes to international travel. But it works!

Does the phone need an active ATT&T sim card installed while running the root file and before switching to the foreign sim?!

It’s been so long ago that I don’t really remember, but I don’t think you need the SIM. The rooting process should be independent of the presence of the SIM.
